About the Project

We are partnering with a technology startup building and operating multiple web-based products where artificial intelligence is a core part of the product experience and underlying systems.

The company develops products across a range of markets, including regulated industries such as healthcare, insurance, and legal, as well as products designed for broader consumer and business use. As a result, security, privacy, authorization, and traceability requirements vary depending on the product and its level of risk.

AI is also deeply integrated into the engineering workflow. The team uses advanced AI development tools and coding agents extensively for research, implementation, code analysis, debugging, testing, documentation, and engineering productivity. The expectation is not to blindly rely on AI-generated output, but to use AI as a powerful engineering multiplier while maintaining strong technical judgment and code quality.

The role requires joining existing systems, understanding their architecture, and making changes safely without compromising authentication, payments, permissions, data integrity, or other critical workflows.

You will contribute across multiple products currently at different stages of development. This requires strong adaptability, the ability to work effectively with existing codebases and architectures, and the discipline to maintain consistent engineering standards across projects.

Role and Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services across multiple products.
• Build and maintain APIs, endpoints, webhooks, internal services, background processes, and automated workflows.
• Develop production systems using TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, Next.js, and Cloudflare Workers.
• Design and maintain relational data models using PostgreSQL and Supabase.
• Implement secure authentication, sessions, roles, permissions, and data access controls.
• Design and maintain integrations with payment providers, third-party APIs, and external services.
• Integrate frontend, backend, authentication, databases, and external services into reliable end-to-end product experiences.
• Contribute to frontend development using React and Next.js when required.
• Integrate AI models and AI-powered capabilities directly into production products.
• Build AI agents capable of retrieving information, using tools, and executing actions.
• Design and maintain agent harnesses, skills, tools, and execution workflows.
• Implement tool/function calling, structured outputs, JSON Schema validation, and reliable model interaction patterns.
• Design permissions, rules, safeguards, validation, and monitoring around agent actions.
• Manage model-related failures, retries, rate limits, costs, latency, and reliability.
• Implement RAG, embeddings, semantic search, and AI-powered information retrieval capabilities.
• Build validation, testing, and evaluation mechanisms for AI-generated outputs and agent behavior.
• Use advanced AI development tools as a regular part of the engineering workflow for research, implementation, debugging, testing, documentation, and code review.
• Review, audit, and correct AI-generated or AI-assisted code to ensure production quality, security, and maintainability.
• Design systems with security, privacy, authorization, and traceability requirements from the beginning.
• Maintain technical documentation and evidence for relevant security, compliance, and operational controls.
• Prepare and maintain applications for stable production operation.
• Perform deployments and investigate production errors and incidents.
• Maintain logging, monitoring, backups, rollback procedures, and recovery processes.
• Document architecture, technical decisions, operational procedures, and recurring engineering practices.
• Identify recurring technical problems and turn appropriate solutions into automated tests, validations, rules, controls, or alerts to prevent them from recurring.
• Contribute to engineering standards and technical improvements across the company's different products.

What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Strong proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript, and Node.js.
• Professional experience building production backend services and APIs.
• Experience with React and Next.js.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL or equivalent relational databases.
• Experience implementing authentication, sessions, roles, permissions, and access-control systems.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs and external services.
• Strong understanding of Git and collaborative software development practices.
• Experience with production deployments, development environments, secrets management, logging, and monitoring.
• Advanced and demonstrated use of AI as part of the software engineering workflow.
• Experience using AI for code analysis, implementation, debugging, testing, technical research, documentation, and code review.
• Experience working with AI-assisted development tools and coding agents in a structured and responsible way.
• Ability to review, audit, validate, and correct AI-generated code.
• Ability to safely understand and modify existing production codebases.
• Strong problem-solving and technical investigation skills with the ability to work autonomously.
• Strong technical judgment and ability to build secure, stable, and maintainable systems.
• Ability to work primarily on backend systems while contributing to frontend development when necessary.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

AI & Agent Engineering

• Practical experience integrating AI into production products, internal tools, automations, or engineering workflows.
• Experience working with model APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic/Claude, or equivalent providers.
• Experience building AI agents that can retrieve information, use tools, and execute actions.
• Experience with AI-powered software development tools and coding agents.
• Understanding of agent harness engineering and structured agent execution.
• Experience creating and managing skills, tools, and capabilities for AI agents.
• Experience with tool calling/function calling and structured outputs.
• Strong understanding of JSON Schema and structured data validation.
• Experience with context management and memory for AI systems.
• Experience with RAG, embeddings, semantic search, or related retrieval architectures.
• Experience validating AI-generated responses and agent actions.
• Experience implementing logging, tracing, testing, and evaluation for AI systems.
• Understanding of error handling, retries, rate limits, cost management, and latency optimization for model-based systems.
• Strong awareness of privacy and responsible handling of sensitive information.

The team uses an internal approach called Guides + Sensors to structure rules, permissions, validations, tests, and monitoring around agents and automations.

This is not a prompt-engineering role. We are looking for someone who has worked with AI as part of real products, systems, automations, and engineering processes — not only someone who has experience writing prompts.

Authentication, Payments & Data

Experience with the following is highly valued:
